CRIES OF THE RAVEN

Tanis tried to speak to Raven after services one evening, but he was ceremoniously dismissed, it sparked his anger. He remembered the week prior when they met secretly, in the forest, per his request. He’d seen the pansy ass necklace Raven considered a weapon, pfftt! He immediately commissioned a more appropriate means of protection for his priest. He’d had a six inch cross dagger made to his specifications at the blacksmith and requested Raven meet him at the creek, he intended to surprise him with it. And surprise him he did! “Tanis, it’s exquisite!” It was a Celtic cross modeled exactly to the tattoo on Ravens neck, made of silver and pewter, six inches long with the letters T & R molded into the top on the back overlapping each other. Raven briefly pictured himself and Tanis overlapping each other, and then shook his head vigorously to remove the image.

The hilt separated from the length of it and viola, there was a short sharp dagger, razor sharp to be precise. Raven moved to prick his finger and test the sharpness and Tanis immediately grabbed his wrist. “Don’t do that, its razor sharp.” They shared a brief kiss and an emotional embrace before Raven pulled away from him again, quickly closing the door he’d barely turned the knob on. Aiya’s brief touch brought him back from his thoughts. “Tanis, will you join us for dinner?” “Yes, I think I will.” He followed her out of the chapel looking back briefly only to meet Raven’s stare, he had been watching him walk away. Raven blushed and bowed his head, turning his back to him. Tanis was quickly tiring of this game of cat and mouse.

Raven stepped out of the shower, drying off and wrapping the towel around his waist. He cleaned the steam off the mirror with his hand and stared at his reflection for several minutes. His emotions were at war and his insides a tangled mess. He had never felt this way, the way he felt for Tanis, and it confused him. His heart skipped a beat when the man entered a room and then felt empty when he was not in it. When he touched him every cell in his body came alive, oh my god when he kissed him. No, he couldn’t do this, he couldn’t go there. Not because it was forbidden, there had been priests in the past that were married. In the beginning Raven couldn’t find the answer to why not when he dreamed of a relationship with Tanis, he had recently come to the conclusion that he simply didn’t know how. All his training was to put God first before himself and man, how he could enter into a relationship with someone and be honest with them that they would always be second best.

But Tanis would never be second, from that first hand shake he had taken first place in Ravens heart, God still held the key to his soul.
